Dear FIFSTA Country Members,
As the year draws to a close, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of FIFSTA, a federation uniting food technology professionals across diverse and vibrant Asian nations.
The future of food in Asia is bright, thanks to the collaborative efforts of FIFSTA country members. We are building upon the strong foundations laid by the established food processing industries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, while supporting the growth and development of sectors in Myanmar, Laos, Brunei, and Cambodia. Singapore's innovative spirit inspires us, and the rich culinary traditions of countries like the Philippines and Thailand remind us of the importance of preserving and enhancing our food heritage. Together, we will continue to shape a sustainable and prosperous food future for Asia.
This year's achievements include successful participation in Propak Thailand, June 2024 and the 22nd IUFOST World Food Congress , September 2024 (Rimini, Italy), along with the finalization of the 2025 ASEAN Food Conference (Davao, Philippines) to be hosted by PAFT Inc., positioning FIFSTA for significant advancements in ASEAN food technology.
May the upcoming holidays bring you joy and prosperity, echoing the festive traditions celebrated throughout our diverse region.
We wish you a happy and healthy New Year, filled with continued success and collaboration.
Sincerely,
The FIFSTA Team
🌟 FIFSTA Members Shine at FIA Member's Day in Singapore! 🌟
On November 15, 2025, esteemed members of the Federation of Institutes of Food Science and Technology in ASEAN (FIFSTA) actively participated in a dynamic panel discussion during the FIA Member's Day in Singapore. The discussion, titled "Food Technologists' Take on the Concept of Ultra-Processed Food and the Role of Food Processing," brought together experts from across the region to share their valuable insights.
The panel included:
Dr. Kom Kamolpatana, Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT)
Mrs. Sharidah Yusoff, Malaysian Institute of Food Technology (MIFT)
Professor Lotis Francisco, The Philippine Association of Food Technologists (PAFT)
Professor Purwiyatno Hariyadi, SEAFAST Center IPB, Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia
The discussion highlighted the controversial concept of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), focusing on the confusion and misconceptions it generates, its impact on food culture, and the indispensable role of food processing in delivering safe, nutritious, and sustainable foods.
FIFSTA members collectively emphasized the importance of refining the UPF concept to better reflect evidence-based perspectives while recognizing food processing's critical contributions to public health, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
A heartfelt thank you to Food Industry Asia (FIA) for organizing this impactful event and providing a platform for collaboration and dialogue among ASEAN food science leaders.
